'The Electric Ant' Comic Series In the Works

According to a press release posted on PhilipKDick.com yesterday. One of PKD's coolest short stories, "The Electric Ant" is set to become a "limited series" (whatever that means) in 2009. According to the press release:

"The creative team behind this existential thriller includes acclaimed writer David Mack (Daredevil, Kabuki) and artist Pascal Alixe (Ultimate X-Men, 1602: Fantastik Four), joined by Consulting Editor Brian Michael Bendis (award-winning author behind Secret Invasion) and renowned artist Paul Pope, who will provide covers to the series."

"The Electric Ant" is one of my favorite PKD shorts, and I think, with the right team, this could be a great series. I know Lethem's a big fan of comics, so let's hope he's helping steer. Certainly Dick appreciated comic books, how well do you think this medium will suit the story or PKD's work in general?

Update: Here's an article with tons more info.

Double X2 Update: The paid writers over at io9.com have posted some sample art from the series (below and above).

I'm surprised there hasn't already been a ton of comics based on Dick's work. We always hear about how novels like Ubik are "unfilmable," but that and a bunch of others would make great comics. Instead we get a half-assed Scanner Darkly "graphic novel" that just takes still images from the movie and adds word bubbles.

I wonder if Dick's kids are charging huge amounts of money for the rights to comic adaptations like they do with movies. From what I understand, Linklater talked them into lowering their price for the rights to Scanner when he convinced them that he wanted to do a faithful adaptation. Perhaps some comic writers and artists could do the same thing?

By the way, a "limited series" in comics is like a miniseries on TV. There will be multiple issues, but a set number. Think of it like a serial novel. Each issue will be released separately, and then (probably) collected later in a single volume.

Super excited about this.
David Mack adapting PKD. And judging from his interviews he's working closely with the producer of the films Scanner Darkly (and Waking Life ) and the Dick Estate and has written a faithful adaptation.
